Sheatsley Earns CoSIDA Academic Honors

April 19, 2005

KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Dominic Moccia was selected to represent the University of Rhode Island at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference to be held May 29 through June 2 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

A junior diver from Mahopac, N.Y., Moccia is one of 324 student-athletes nationwide who will take part in the Leadership Conference. The NCAA committee received 1,166 nominations from 298 institutions. A selection committee at URI nominated four student-athletes and the NCAA committee chose Moccia as the representative.

"Dominic's selection speaks volume as to his outstanding character, his many academic successes and his commitment to be the best at whatever he sets his heart and mind to," Rhode Island athletic director Tom McElroy said. "His selection from a field of nearly 1,200 student-athletes from across the nation is a source of great pride and inspiration for the entire URI community."

Moccia, a biological sciences and Italian major with a 3.79 GPA, dives for the URI swimming & diving team. Moccia finished 10th on the 3-meter board and 11th on the 1-meter board at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships.

"Dominic has certainly displayed his commitment to his athletic and leadership development over the three years he has been a part of the program," Rhode Island swimming & diving coach Mick Westkott said. "He came in as a walk-on without any diving experience and he has developed to the point where he is competitive in the conference. It is because of his hard work and dedication that he has gotten him to this point. This is a great honor for him."

The junior has earned Dean's List honors five times and was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's honor roll on three occasions. He serves as the Treasurer for URI's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and is a member of Phi Eta Sigma (Freshman Honor Society), Chi Alpha Sigma (National College Athlete Honor Society) and Cultural Italian-American Organization.

Junior women's track & field/cross country runner Emily Anderson (Westerly, R.I.), junior women's tennis player Erin Fleming (Boston, Mass.) and redshirt-sophomore men's football player Jason Green (Milton, Mass.) were the other nominees from URI, with Fleming selected as the alternate.
