The Wyomissing, Pa. native strives to develop in his student-athletes an appreciation of the work and commitment necessary to fully realize their both academic and athletic goals. Westkott emphasizes that the college years are all about growth and developing the student - athlete's character - and that these qualities will carry them through their adult years. He strives to develop in his student-athletes the understanding that the essence of the team is their personal commitment to it.

Coach Westkott has taken an active role in promoting and developing intercollegiate swimming in Rhode Island and in the New England area. He has served as president of both the men's and the women's New England Intercollegiate Swimming Associations. Westkott's peers twice selected him New England Coach of the Year. He has sponsored and directed both national level and regional clinics that have promoted the development of his skills and knowledge of his colleagues.

Westkott has been involved in the many aspects of the swimming community, including summer swim camps at Brown University, Providence College, and the University of Tennessee. He has retained his certification to coach in a USS program and assists with the Rams Swimming Program, which operates out of the University's Tootell Aquatic Center. He has served as the meet and event coordinators for both the Rhode Island Special Olympics and the 1999, 2001, and 2004 World Scholar-Athlete Games.

During his tenure at the University of Rhode Island, Westkott has coached numerous New England, ECAC, and Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Champions. Additionally, his teams continually achieve CSCAA Academic All America honors, and many of his swimmers and divers have been recognized as members on the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team, including Ryan Sheatsley in 2007-08.
