Men's Soccer Hosts Boston College In NCAA First Round Match
Nov. 13, 2000 KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island men's soccer team will host an NCAA first-round match against Boston College at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m.
The Rams are making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Championship and eighth overall (1972, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1995, 1996 and 1999). This marks the third time, that Rhode Island has hosted an NCAA Tournament match. In 1996, Hartford defeated the homestanding Rams, 3-2 in overtime. In 1979, the Rams lost to Columbia 5-1 in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
"We should be very proud of this accomplishment. Everyone at Rhode Island, from the administration, to the support staff to the boosters has worked hard over the past year at making the URI Soccer Complex a first-rate facility. This home game is a culmination of those efforts and we're very extremely excited to be hosting the first round of the NCAAs."
The winner of the URI/Boston College match will take on the winner of the North Carolina/William & Mary contest, which will be played on Sunday, November 19 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Rams, who boast a 16-5-1 record, earned a berth to the NCAA Championship after defeating Georgia State, 4-3 in overtime, in an NCAA Play-In match in Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday afternoon. The Rams cruised to their second straight Atlantic 10 Championship with victories over Massachusetts (2-1) and Dayton (5-1).
The Rams are led by a trio of First-Team All-Atlantic 10 performers. Junior All-American Nicholas McCreath leads the team in scoring with 47 points (18g, 11a) while sophomore Anthony Curtis has been dominant in the midfield, adding 14 points (4g, 6a). Senior Neil Lewis has anchored a URI defense that has allowed only 22 goals in 22 games this season, including only eight goals in 11 games at the URI Soccer Complex.
Junior Gareth Elliott, who earned Atlantic 10 All-Championship honors, is second on the team with 25 points (8g, 9a) while senior Mark Bryant has posted a 0.94 goals against average with seven shutouts in goal for the Rams.
Boston College, which posted a 12-6-1 record, advanced to the NCAA Championship after capturing the Big East's automatic bid with victories against Rutgers (1-0) and Seton Hall (2-1) in the Big East Championship.
"They're very good defensively. They have a fantastic keeper (Chris Hamblin) and they're a very talented team. It should be a good matchup.
