Men's Soccer Finishes Spring Season With Alumni Game and BBQ

April 24, 2009

KINGSTON, R.I. -The University of Rhode Island men's soccer team will complete the 2009 non-traditional season with its Annual Alumni Game on Saturday, April 25th at 11 a.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.

The Rams to date have compiled a 3-1-2 record this spring defeating Army (1-0), Bryant University (2-0) and the University of Southern New Hampshire (1-0) while losing to Holy Cross (2-3) and drawing with the University of Massachusetts and Northeastern University by identical scores 0-0 scores. Leading the Rams in scoring have been:

Erkko Puranen (2G, 0A, 4PTS)
Andres Ruiz (1G, 1A, 3PTS)
Michael Tanke (1G, 1A, 3PTS)
Gary Crooks (1G, 0A, 2PTS)
Jonathan Pereira (1G, 0A, 2PTS)
Greg Balicki (0G, 1A, 1PT)
Kevin Shaw (0G, 1A, 1PT)
Dwayne Williams (0G, 1A, 1PT)

The Rhody men have competed with a depleted squad this spring with seven players missing at one time or another due to injury or sickness.

"I've been pleased with our results, especially considering the small squad we fielded at times," said head coach John O'Connor. "It has been a valuable experience in a competitive environment for players that didn't log many minutes on the field in the fall."

Following the alumni game, there will be a BBQ for all alumni, friends and family at the URI Soccer Complex. The BBQ is FREE for all alums and $10.00 per person for friends and family. Checks and donations to the program to help defray the coast of the event can be made out to "RIRAA-Men's Soccer."

The Rams open up the fall campaign on Tuesday September 1st when they take on defending 2008 ACC Tournament Champion Boston College in Kingston at 7 p.m.
