Borman's Late Goal Leads Rhody Past Dayton, 2-1
Oct. 14, 2007
KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Danleigh Borman (Cape Town, South Africa) scored his first goal of the season with less than three minutes left on the clock as the Rhode Island men's soccer team knocked off Dayton, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex. Senior Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) added a goal and an assist in the win, which moves Rhody to 4-6-1 overall (2-0-0 Atlantic 10) while Dayton falls to 6-3-2 (0-2-0 Atlantic 10). After a scoreless first half, Dayton returned from the break and took a 1-0 lead when Alex Torda beat URI goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) with a shot into the top left corner of the net. Assists on the goal were credited to Josh Albers and Florian Decamps. The Flyers' advantage was short-lived though, as Tumicz netted the equalizer 13 minutes later. After receiving a long pass from redshirt senior Stephen Scalzo (Plymouth, Minnesota), Tumicz took the ball into the box, drew UD goalkeeper Zac Gibbens off his line and maneuvered a shot through the remaining Dayton defense to tie things up, 1-1. Borman went on to tally the game-winner at the 87:09 mark when he found the back of the net on a shot to the far post from the left side of the goal. Tumicz and senior Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) picked up assists on the tally. Just over a minute later, senior Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) was ejected from the game after receiving a red card for his second caution of the match. Because of the red card, Cameron will have to miss Rhode Island's next contest - an Oct. 19th matchup at Charlotte.
URI was forced to play a man down for the final two minutes of the game but was able to hold on for the 2-1 win. "It's a great victory for us," said head coach John O'Connor. "But it also comes at a great price. Fortunately, we have a lot of depth on our team so we'll rely on some guys to step it up and possibly play a different role to make up for Cameron's absence in the midfield on Friday night." The Rams are back in action on Oct. 19, when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a 7 p.m. match against the 49ers. |
