KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island dropped a hard-fought 4-3 double overtime contest against Oregon State in the Lighthouse Inn/Kappa Classic at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. Earlier in the afternoon, Boston University captured the Wakefield Cup with a 1-0 win over Rider, finishing the tournament with a 2-0 record.

Oregon State got on the board first when senior Alan Gordon blasted in a rebounded shot from 18 yards out to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead at the 23:57 mark. Rhode Island responded at the 38:07 mark when freshman Joe Spofford played a through ball at midfield to fellow freshman Jeffrey Gonsalves who was streaking down the left side of the field. Gonsalves then lofted the ball of the OSU keeper's head to knot the game at 1-1. Oregon State regained the lead midway through the second half when freshman Robbie Findley tallied an unassisted goal at the 65:57 mark. Spofford tied the game for URI after putting in a pass from freshman Elliott Morgan at the top of the box to make the game 2-2 at the 76:52 mark.

With time running out in regulation, senior Brian Farber game Oregon State a 3-2 lead when he scored an unassisted breakaway goal with 85:32. The Rams responded quickly, however, when sophomore Simon Gatti put in a shot from 20-yards out after a cross from senior Conor Lander to make the score 3-3. With less than :30 left in regulation, URI's Joe Spofford received his second yellow card, forcing the Rams to play a man-down for the rest of the game.

After 10 scoreless minutes in the first overtime period, the two teams headed into the second overtime. At the 104:42 mark, Oregon State's Gordon scored his second goal of the game, the game-winner, after heading in a cross from sophomore Ryan Johnson.

Sophomore Dean Ruddy made four stops in goal in the loss for URI while OSU's Matthew Fitchett had two stops in the win. With the win, Oregon State improves to 5-3 while Rhode Island falls to 2-5 for the year. The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, September 24th when they travel to intra-state rival Brown for a matchup with the Bears at 7:00 p.m.
