Men's Soccer Posts 2-0 Win Over Iona

Sept. 11, 2009

Box Score

HANOVER, N.H. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team recorded its second shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 blanking of Iona, Friday night at Dartmouth's Nike Hypertherm Classic. The Rams scored once in each half to secure the win.

Freshman Jamie Eckmayer (Harrington Park, N.J.) got things started late in the first frame when he sent a pass from junior Michael Tanke (Niles, Mich.) past Iona goalkeeper Nils Binstock with just 1:15 left on the clock.

Junior Jonathan Pereira (Barrington, R.I.) doubled the Rams' lead midway through the second half, scoring from the left side at the 67:51 mark. Senior Gary Crooks (Falkirk, Scotland) picked up an assist on the play.

The goals were the first of their respective careers for both Eckmayer and Pereira.

Senior Chris Pennock (Spennymoor, England), meanwhile, made a pair of saves in each half to keep the Gaels off the board en route to posting his second shutout of the season.

With the win, Rhode Island improves to 2-1-0 while Iona drops to 3-1-0. The Rams return to the Nike Hypertherm Classic on Sunday afternoon to take on host team and sixth-ranked (Soccer America) Dartmouth at 2:30 p.m.
