KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Rhode Island will host the 16th annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic on Sept. 21-22 at the Newport National Golf Club. The 2009 Adams Cup field includes 18 teams from 11 different conferences.
The College Amateur tournament will be played on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m., while Adams Cup participants will tee off at 8 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
Over the past 15 years, the Adams Cup of Newport has developed into one of the finest golf tournaments on the East Coast, annually attracting some of the top NCAA golf programs in the country.
"The Adams Cup gives the best college teams in the country an opportunity to compete at a spectacular facility and experience Rhode Island hospitality." said URI golf coach Tom Drennan. "We have put together another very competitive field made up of teams from around the country and are excited to compete in this year's Adams Cup."
URI finished sixth overall in the team standings a year ago, finishing with a three-round total of 895. Brad Valois was Rhody's top finisher, tying for seventh place overall. He had a three-round total of 220 (75-76-69). Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon fired an Adams Cup record total of 204 to take individual honors.
The Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club - from the championship tees - is a par-72, 7,244-yard course designed by legendary course architect Arthur Hills.
