KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island will host the 12th-annual Adams Cup of Newport Cleveland Golf Classic on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26-27 on the Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club. The College-Amateur will be played on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12:30 p.m., while participants will tee off at 8:00 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday.
"The Adams Cup is truly one of URI's most unique athletic events" said Rhode Island Director of Athletics Tom McElroy. "The field is always filled with many of the top student-athletes from across the country that are always eager to compete for the Cup."
Over the past 12 years, the Adams Cup of Newport has developed into one of the finest golf tournaments on the East Coast, annually attracting some of the top NCAA golf programs in the country. This year's 17-team field will include traditional NCAA Division-I powers North Carolina and Houston, as well as Division-II Bryant, which is coached by URI Hall of Famer Archie Boulet.
"The Adams Cup gives the best college teams in the country an opportunity to compete at a spectacular facility and experience Rhode Island hospitality," said URI golf coach Tom Drennan. "Attracting programs each year like North Carolina and Houston is a testament to all the hard work that people do to make this event such a success."
The Orchard Course at Newport National from the championship tees is a par-72, 7,244-yard course designed by legendary course architect Arthur Hills.
