URI Golfers Past and Present Shine at R.I. Amateur Championship Match Play

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Today's match play rounds at the 103rd Rhode Island Amateur Championship had a strong URI golf presence. Seven players with Rhody ties competed on Wednesday at Agawam Hunt C.C.

Two current members of the team - Brad Valois and Bill Forcier - joined four former Rams and a member of the incoming class of 2008-09 in the 32-man field beginning Wednesday morning.

Valois and Forcier each won their respective matches, 1-up. Forcier downed former Rhody great Paul Quigley. Additionally, Ram alums Jason Pannone (6 and 5), Ben Tuthill (19 holes), and Jon Pannone (3 and 2) advanced to the afternoon round of 16. Incoming freshman Ben Conway won his match, 3 and 2.

In the afternoon matches, Valois - the two-time defending R.I. Amateur Champion - defeated Jon Pannone, 3 and 2. Forcier lost his match in extra play, going 22 holes. Tuthill moved on (8 and 6), while Jason Pannone (1 up) and Conway (3 and 2) fell in their respective matches.

Valois will tee off in his match on Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m., while Tuthill will precede the final group, at 8:20 a.m.
