NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Chad Spencer (North Kingstown, R.I.) shot a 1-under par 71 to lead the University of Rhode Island men's golf team into fourth place after the opening round of the 11th Annual Adams Cup of Newport Cleveland Golf Classic on Monday.

The three-round tournament continues this afternoon with another 18 holes and concludes Tuesday morning with the final round scheduled for 8 a.m.

Spencer shot the best front nine score of the opening round with a 3-under par 33 and had a 2-over 36 on the back to put him in a four-way tie for eighth place with Georgia Southern's Aaron Price, Michigan State's Ryan Brehm and Charlotte's Josh An.

Michigan State's Matt Harmon is the individual leader after carding a 5-under 67 and teammate Andrew Ruthkoski is in a tie for second with Indiana's Jeff Overton with 4-under 68s, as the Spartans have a hold on first place with a 281.

Georgia Southern is second at 286, Charlotte is third with a 287 and host Rhode Island (297) has a one-stroke lead on Indiana (298) for fourth place.

Rhode Island sophomore Ben Spitz (Norwell, Mass.) is in a tie for 18th place with a 2-over 74, while senior Kenneth Fahey (Clifden, Ireland) and sophomore Jason Pannone (East Greenwich, R.I.) are tied for27th with 4-over 76s. Sophomore Fraser Hunt (Bermuda) is in a tie for 35th with a 5-over 77.

Sophomore Jesse Larson (Mendon, Vt.) led a group of five Rhode Island individuals with an even-par 72 which puts him in a tie for 12th. Sophomore Devon Quigley (Rumford, R.I.) fired a 2-over 74 which has him in a tie for 18th with Spitz.

Senior Colby Pacheco (Wakefield, R.I.) shot an 80, sophomore Andrew Conway (Westford, Mass.) had an 81 and freshman Mike McCampbell (Barrington, R.I.) posted an 83.
