KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Rhode Island golf team finished sixth overall at the 15th Annual Adams Cup of Newport, held Sept. 22-23 at Newport National Golf Club (par 72 - 7,244 yards).

The Rams finished with a three-round total of 895 (294-300-301). Texas A&M won the team title, with an eight-under par total of 856 (286-280-290). Minnesota was second, with a score of 869 (284-287-298). There was a logjam between third and sixth place, with four teams finishing within just six strokes of each other.

"I thought entering the tournament, we could finish anywhere between third and sixth," said head coach Tom Drennan. "The competition was very tough on both days, and the team scores reflected that."

Leading the way for the Rams was senior Brad Valois, who tied for seventh place overall (75-76-69=220). This afternoon, the Warwick, R.I. native fired off a 32 on the front nine, en route to a final round score of 69 (-3).

Senior Mark Stevens also closed strong with a third round score of 71. He finished in a tie for 20th place, compiling a total of 224 strokes (77-76-71). Bill Forcier shot a final round 83 after shooting even-par through the first 36 holes of play. He finished in a tie for 32nd place, with a total of 227 (71-73-83).

Freshmen Taylor Fontaine (74-77-78=229) and Kevin Josephson (74-75-83=232) finished in a tie for 37th and 47th, respectively, rounding out the Rhody golfers.

"We saw some good rounds from everyone during Adams Cup play," Drennan said. "I think we come out of the tournament with a lot of reasons to be optimistic. "

Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon fired off an Adams Cup record total of 204 to capture individual honors. Burgoon opened play with a three-under 69, before shooting the tournament low round of 66 in round two. The senior standout closed with a 69, finishing up Adams Cup play at 12-under par. As a freshman in 2005, Burgoon finished second at the Adams Cup with a three-round total of 218 (74-72-72).
