HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Freshman Taylor Fontaine finished third overall at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship, held at the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort (par 71, 6,887 yards).

The Southbridge, Mass. native carded an even-par 71 on the third and final round of the A-10 Championship. He finished with a total of 217 (+4) over the 54-hole tournament. Fontaine shot a one-over 72 on day one, followed by a second round 73. He made seven birdies on the weekend.

Fontaine was the top newcomer on the weekend and shared the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie award with Xavier's Sebastian McLean, who finished right behind him in fourth place.

Senior Mark Stevens closed out his outstanding Rhode Island career tied for 12th place overall. He shot a final round 73 to finish out with a total of 224 (+11). The Concord, N.H. native opened A-10 championship play with a 73, following that up with a second day 78. Stevens carded six birdies over the three days.

Senior Brad Valois finished in a tie for 19th place, with a total of 229. He opened up play with a 77, before firing his best round of the championship - a second round 74. The Warwick, R.I. native finished his URI career with a final round 78.

Kevin Josephson placed 46th overall, with a combined score of 244. The freshman opened A-10 championship place with a 77 on the first day, followed by a second round 85. He closed out tournament action with a final round 82.

Rounding out the Rhody golfers was John Kelly, who finished 56th overall. He compiled a three-round total of 255 (83-85-87). Charlotte's Corey Nagy was the top individual finisher on the weekend, with a score of 212 (71-69-72).

 

 

As a team, Rhode Island finished fifth overall with a three-day total of 914 (299-311-304). Charlotte took the team title for the fourth consecutive year, with a total of 872. Xavier was second (882), Richmond third (897) and Temple in fourth (907).
