Rhody Sits in Fourth After Two Rounds at Ironwood
April 4, 2009
Greenville, S.C. - The University of Rhode Island Men's golf team sits alone in fourth place after two rounds of the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina University. The event is begin held at Ironwood Golf and Country Club (Par 72-7,076 yards).
Weather conditions improved overnight in the Greenville area. Temperatures in the 70's and moderate winds allowed for much improved scoring conditions on the Lee Trevino designed Ironwood course.
Rhody recorded one of its better rounds of the year on Saturday, coming in at 5-over par, 293. The team's score was good for the third best of the day. Host East Carolina continues to lead the tournament. The Pirates (+7) shot a 292 today, holding a lead over UNC Wilmington (+16), Newberry College (+17), and URI (+18).
First round leader Taylor Fontaine struggled to a 76 in the second round. The freshman made two birdies on the day, but made back to back bogeys coming in. He sits in a three way tie for third place and is two shots out of the overall lead.
Mark Stevens shot a one-under par 71 to lead Rhody. He took advantage of Ironwood's reachable par 5's by making birdie on three of the four. The senior made only two bogeys on the day and sits alone in eighth place. Stevens has now shot under par in three of his last five rounds.
Senior Brad Valois chipped in with a 73, freshman Kevin Josephson shot a 74, and sophomore John Kelly fired his best round of the spring with a 75. The round was Rhody's most consistent on the year, as all five players shot in the mid-70's or lower.
UNC Wilmington's Derek Wallace leads the event at 140 (-4). There are eight players within five shots of the lead.
Play continues tomorrow morning. Rhode Island is scheduled to tee off at 8 A.M.
