Fontaine leads at Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate

Greenville, N.C. - The University of Rhode Island Men's golf team sits in third place after the first round of the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina University. The event is begin held at Ironwood Golf and Country Club (Par 72-7,076 yards).
Rhody is ten shots behind first round leader East Carolina and one shot behind second place Newberry College. The team shot a round of 301 despite tough scoring conditions, with wind gusts of up to 40 MPH.
Taylor Fontaine recorded the best round of the year for Rhody on Friday. He holds a five shot lead over the next closest competitor. The Massachusetts native scorched the Lee Trevino designed course with a 6-under par 66. The freshman made four birdies and an eagle while going bogey free. The score marks Fontaine's lowest round in a Rhode Island uniform and is his second time firing in the sixties this spring.
Mark Stevens came in at two-over par, with a 74. The senior had two birdies and an eagle on the day. Kevin Josephson finished strong, playing one-under par over his final twelve holes. Brad Valois fired an 83, while John Kelly came in with an 84.
Rhode Island will play in the final group tomorrow. The team's first tee time is scheduled for 11:24.
