KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman Chris Francoeur has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the week, announced Friday afternoon by the conference office. He is the second Ram this season to earn the honor as classmate Bobby Weise was selected as the league's Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15.
A native of Amesbury, Mass., Francoeur tied for 23rd place at last week's Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge. After opening the two-round tournament with a 78 on Saturday, he responded with a 2-under 70 on Sunday. The 36-spot jump up the leaderboard was the biggest of the day among the field of 86 golfers. His combined 148 (78-70) put him at +4 for the tournament.
Overall, the Rhody rookie recorded nine birdies and led the field by going -3 on par-4 holes.
The Rams return to action at The Connecticut Cup. The two-day event will be hosted by UConn and held at Ellington Ridge Country Club, Oct. 9-10.
