CELEBRATING 25 YEARS: The '84 URI Football Team - Part Nine

Oct. 30, 2009

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is part nine of a 13-part series that will run on GoRhody.com throughout the fall celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Rhode Island football team, which advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA playoffs. The 13-part series will feature interviews from head coach Bob Griffin and recaps of each game during the 1984 season. The URI athletics department will honor the 1984 team at halftime of the Rams' Oct. 31 game against William and Mary.

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team picked up its school record sixth-consecutive win at Lehigh University as it defeated the Engineers 24-16 on Oct. 27, 1984.

With the win, Rhody improved to 8-1 on the year as it approached the final two games of the season.

Junior quarterback Tom Ehrhardt threw for a game-high 367 yards through the air. He also tossed three touchdown passes. Two of Ehrhardt's touchdown passes went to Brian Forster, who finished the game with a team-high 74 yards receiving.

Rhode Island jumped out to a commanding 24-3 lead early in the fourth quarter, but had to hang on when Lehigh all-America quarterback Marty Horn began to click in the late stages of the game as the Engineers scored a pair of touchdowns.

Following the win, Rhody moved up to No. 6 in the national rankings and No. 2 in the New England region.
