KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island football team returns to action this Saturday, October 13, when it hosts No. 9 James Madison University on Homecoming Weekend at Meade Stadium at 1 p.m. The Rams are seeking their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association win while the Dukes are looking to push their conference mark to 4-0. Last time out, the Rams (1-4, 0-2 CAA) picked up their first win of the 2007 season, a 49-42 triumph over Brown University in double-overtime on September 29 at Brown Stadium in Providence. URI trailed by eight late in the fourth quarter when junior quarterback Derek Cassidy (Winter Haven, Fla.) scored from a yard out with 1:01 remaining and then hit sophomore Shawn Leonard (Stoughton, Mass.) with the game-tying two-point conversion, sending the game into overtime. The two teams traded scored in the first frame before Leonard hauled in a 10-yard pass from Cassidy in the second overtime to put the Rams in front for good. The win marked the second-straight Governor's Cup victory for URI. "I was proud of our football team. They persevered and never gave up," said Rhode Island head coach Tim Stowers. "We made one more play than Brown did. It's probably the most exciting game in the series between these two schools. We were down five offensive linemen - three of which were starters, and the guys who came in did a pretty good job. We only turned the ball over once, and we had three backs over 100 yards."
Rhode Island compiled 608 total yards of offense against the Bears, which is the third-highest mark in school history. Cassidy led the attack with 199 yards on the ground, just ahead of senior Jerell Jones (Yonkers, N.Y.), who notched 117 yards, and junior Jimmy Hughes (Westport, Conn.), who recorded 104 yards. Junior Joe Casey (Syracuse, N.Y.) fell six yards shy of his 12th-career 100-yard game, finishing with 94. He enters the weekend sixth in the conference and 24th in the nation in rushing, averaging 102.4 yards per contest. The Dukes, meanwhile, bring a 5-1 record and a No. 9 national ranking to Kingston following a 21-14 win over Northeastern on Saturday. Running back Antoinne Bolton rushed for 108 yards and quarterback Rodney Landers hooked up with Charlie Newman for the game-winning touchdown pass early in the third quarter. The Dukes won despite allowing 395 yards of offense to NU while gaining just 266 yards of their own. Following the go-ahead touchdown, the JMU defense blocked a field goal attempt, broke up a pass in the end zone, and intercepted a pass with less than a minute to play. James Madison holds a 5-3 edge in the all-times series, including a 35-23 win last season in Harrisonburg, Va. |
