Oct. 9, 2009
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is part six of a 13-part series that will run on GoRhody.com throughout the fall celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Rhode Island football team, which advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA playoffs. The 13-part series will feature interviews from head coach Bob Griffin and recaps of each game during the 1984 season. The URI athletics department will honor the 1984 team at halftime of the Rams' Oct. 31 game against William and Mary. KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team slipped past Massachusetts 20-19 in front of over 10,000 fans at Meade Stadium on Oct. 6, 1984. Rhody's victory over the Minutemen was its third-consecutive win and improved its mark to 5-1 on the year. Junior quarterback Tom Ehrhardt picked apart the UMass defense for 408 yards through the air. Ehrhardt's passing performance marked the second straight week he had thrown for over 400 yards. Prior to the 1984 season, no URI quarterback had ever passed for 400 yards or more in a single game. UMass jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Rhody responded by outscoring the Minutemen 20-6 in the second quarter to take a 20-16 lead into the locker room. In the second half, the URI defense held UMass to just three points to secure the wiin. Offensively, URI finished the game with a school-record 558 yards of total offense.
