Brown Game Notes
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team (1-4 overall; 0-2 CAA) returns home Saturday after spending the past two weeks on the road. URI will welcome the Brown Bears to Meade Stadium as the two teams will take part in the 27th annual Governor's Cup. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Rhode Island comes into the game with the hopes of rebounding from a 42-0 road loss to Boston College this past Saturday. Despite the loss, the Rams limited the Eagles to just 27 yards passing. BC's 27 yards passing were the fewest the Rams have allowed through the air this season. "I know a lot of people look at the score and think without looking at the game that we were over matched and outplayed, but there were a lot of positives that came out of it," said Rhode Island football head coach Darren Rizzi on the CAA weekly teleconference. "A game like that is going to make us a better team for the rest of the season. I can honestly say for the fifth week in a row that our team has gotten better." Freshman wide receiver Brandon Johnson-Farrell (Odenton, Md.) led the way offensively as he tied a pair of season-highs with seven catches for 67 yards. Johnson-Farrell currently leads the team in receptions and all-purpose yards. He also leads all freshmen in receptions per game (5.2), kickoff return yardage (21.5) and all purpose yardage (131.6). Rhode Island enters its 93rd meeting with Brown in the hopes of collecting its third straight victory over the Bears. In last year's meeting, URI defeated BU 49-42 in double-overtime. Junior wide receiver Shawn Leonard (Stoughton, Mass.) caught the game-winning touchdown last year. "As a former player here, every year we played Brown was a huge game." Rizzi said. "It means a lot to have that Governor's Cup here at your place for a year." Brown is ranked No. 25 in the Sports Network Poll. The Bears enter Saturday's contest after defeating Harvard 24-20 last Saturday. This season, Rhode Island is 1-1 at home. In URI's first home game of the season (Aug. 30), the Rams defeated Monmouth, 27-24. Two weeks later, the Rhode Island fell 51-43 to then No. 10 ranked New Hampshire (Sept. 13). "This game has a little extra meaning in it because it's our rival up the road," Rizzi said. "I know this is a very important game for Brown and I think a lot of people in the state view this as an important game as well, so we're looking for a great day and a great crowd." The game will be televised on NESN, with Eric Frede handing the play-by-play and Steve DeOssie doing the color commentary. A live video stream will be available on the internet, by visiting www.gorhody.com. Steve McDonald and Terry Lynch will provide the radio call live on the Rams Radio Network - WHJJ 920 AM and WJZS 99.3 FM.
