KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Rhode Island football head coach Darren Rizzi and Brown University football head coach Phil Estes spoke to members of the Rhode Island media at Cuccina Twist Restaurant on Tuesday to preview the 27th annual Governor's Cup.

Rhode Island and Brown have met 92 times with Brown holding a 66-24-2 advantage, but since the beginning of the Governor's Cup in 1981, the two teams have split the last 26 games.

"Obviously the Governor's Cup is a fantastic tradition and I was fortunate enough to experience the game as a student-athlete and now I will be able to experience it as a coach," Rizzi said. "We have a lot guys on our football team who are really fighting their tails off and I have been very proud of them so far this season."

Senior quarterback Derek Cassidy and sophomore Matt Hansen were also on hand for Rhode Island, while senior quarterback Michael Dougherty, junior wide receiver Bobby Sewall and senior defensive back Darrell Harrison represented Brown.

"In preparing for Brown, I can only speak the world as to what their program has been able to accomplish over the years," Rizzi said. "It doesn't surprise me to see how well the team has been coached. Coach (Phil) Estes and their assistants have done a great job in preparing their guys."

"We are very excited about this year's Governor's Cup," Estes said. "This is one of these games where you just have to throw out the records and just go out and play. I would not be surprised if this was a high scoring game and I would not be surprised if this was a defensive struggle. In this game, anything can happen."

In his 10 seasons with Brown, Estes has posted a 59-40 record, including a 4-6 mark in the Governor's Cup series.

Estes admitted he had developed a strong friendship with Rizzi over years, saying, "I want to welcome Darren Rizzi back to his alma mater. He and I have become good friends over the years after working a couple of summer football camps together."

Despite his friendship with the URI first-year head coach, Estes admitted he was less than thrilled when Rizzi returned to his alma mater this year, adding, "I can't tell you that I was overly happy to see that he was hired here at URI and the reason is because I know that he will have a lot of success."

Fans can catch the game live on the New England Sports Network. Steve McDonald and Terry Lynch will provide the radio call live on the Rams Radio Network - WHJJ 920 AM and WJZS 99.3 FM.
