Rhode Island Football Heads to Boston College on Saturday
Sept. 24, 2008
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team (1-3) will meet Boston College for the first time since 1917 on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. Rhode Island comes into the game against Boston College after dropping a 23-20 decision in the closing seconds against Hofstra on Sept. 20. "Although we have not seen the results in the win-loss column, there is no question that we have been more competitive this season," said head coach Darren Rizzi on the CAA weekly teleconference. The Rams trailed the Pride 20-14 with 3:27 remaining, but URI drove 54 yards in nine plays to score the game-tying touchdown. Following a missed extra point, Hofstra drove 58 yards in 44 seconds, which led to a 38-yard field goal. "You just don't see any quit in these guys," Rizzi said. "There was a real sense that even though we were down three points, our guys still felt like they we were going to go down the field and score." After a HU excessive celebration penalty, the Pride was forced to kickoff from its own 15-yard line. URI freshman Brandon Johnson-Farrell then took the ensuing kickoff 51 yards down field, but was tackled on the Hofstra 22-yard line, which ended the game. Senior quarterback Derek Cassidy (Winter Haven, Fla.) posted his fourth-consecutive game with 200-or-more yards or more as he threw for 248 yards completing 18-of-32 of his passes. "Derek has really been a great leader this year and his hard work has really paid off," Rizzi said. "Derek has been spreading the ball around and he can beat you with his feet as well." After throwing for 248 yards against Hofstra, Cassidy eclipsed his career high for passing yards in a single season. Through four games, the URI quarterback has thrown for 1,141 yards, surpassing his previous career high of 1,060 (2006). Seven of Cassidy's passes last week went to freshman wide receiver Brandon Johnson-Farrell (Odenton, Md.), who is tied for the team lead with 19 receptions. "Brandon Johnson-Farrell has done a phenomenal job this season," Rizzi said. "Our staff did a great job in recruiting him and we are glad to have him." Johnson-Farrell has emerged as of one the Rams' top receivers this season, catching 19 passes for 170 yards. Currently, the Maryland native is tied for the team lead with 19 receptions. Johnson-Farrell also leads the team in all-purpose yardage with 570. In 2008, the URI rookie has 343 kickoff-and 61 punt-return yards. Boston College comes into Saturday's game with a 2-1 mark. Last week, BC defeated Central Florida 34-7 at home. The Eagles lone loss this season came against Georgia Tech back on Sept. 6. "This week's game against Boston College is going to present a great challenge," Rizzi said. "Boston College is very well coached and it will be a great marker of where we are at as a team."
