Fordham Game Notes
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team travels to Fordham on Saturday for its first road game of the season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Jack Coffey Field in Bronx, N.Y.
Rhode Island comes into the game in the hopes of starting the year 2-0 for the first time since 2005. The Rams opened the 2008 campaign with a 27-24 victory over Monmouth at home as senior quarterback Derek Cassidy threw for a career-high 257 yards in the win.
"I was pleased with the play of the veterans, especially Derek Cassidy," said head coach Darren Rizzi on the CAA Football weekly teleconference on Monday. "Derek did a good job managing the game in a new offense."
Cassidy became the first URI quarterback to throw for over 250 yards since Jayson Davis (267 yards, 8/25/05 vs. Hofstra).
Freshman kicker Louis Feinstein also played a large role in the Rams victory last Saturday as he connected a pair of field goals, including a 47-yarder en route earning CAA Football Rookie of the Week honors.
"Coming into the first game of the season we were a little concerned about our kicking situation, but Louis (Feinstein) really did a great job for us on Saturday. He is a good kicker and he really has a ton of ability. His kickoffs were great. He also had a great punt inside the five, which gave us great field position on our next offensive series. The future is very bright for him."
Fordham is receiving votes in both the Sports Network and Coaches Polls. This Saturday marks the first game of the year for Fordham.
