"This is a great honor for Joe and the University of Rhode Island football program," said head coach Joe Trainer. "Joe has worked extremely hard to get back to playing shape and we expect him to have a tremendous season this fall." Casey, a three-time First Team All-Conference running back, has rushed for 2,915 yards and is just 475 away for breaking Pat Abbruzzi's career rushing mark of 3,389 yards. He also is tied for seventh with former teammate Jerell Jones (2003-07) with 16 career rushing touchdowns. The Syracuse, N.Y., native missed most of the 2008 season after he suffered a season-ending leg injury with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter of Rhody's season-opener against Monmouth (Aug. 30). The Rams kickoff the 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they play host to Fordham at 1 p.m. at Meade Stadium.
