KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island football team made its first appearance on the practice field Friday afternoon as it began spring practice under the direction of first-year head coach Joe Trainer.

Friday's practice marked the first of 15 sessions the team will hold, concluding with the Blue and White game on Saturday, April 25.

The weather cooperated for the Rams during day one as temperatures settled into the mid-50's with little to no wind. The Rhody coaching staff took full advantage of the day and ran a spirited session featuring several 7 vs. 7 and 11 vs. 11 drills with players practicing in helmets and no pads.

Friday afternoon's also practice saw several familiar faces return to the practice field, including 2008 All-CAA Football honorees Matt Hansen and Brandon Johnson-Farrell.

Redshirt senior Joe Casey also made his return to the practice field and participated in several drills. Casey missed most of 2008 after he suffered season-ending injury in the first quarter of Rhody's game against Monmouth (Aug. 30).

Rhody returns to the practice field on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. All spring practices are open to the public and fans are encouraged to attend. Please visit GoRhody.com for news, recaps, interviews and photos from spring ball.
