Football Head Coach Darren Rizzi Steps Down

Feb. 21, 2009

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island Athletics Department announced Saturday evening that football head coach Darren Rizzi has stepped down to take an assistant coaching position with the National Football League's Miami Dolphins.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish Darren and his family well on their new endeavor," said Athletics Director Thorr Bjorn. "My focus now is on finding a new football coach. The process will be thorough but at the same time, we will move as quickly as possible so that we can have some one in place before the start of spring football.

"There are many great coaches out there waiting for an opportunity like we have at URI. Our drive to put together a championship program will not waiver.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation as the head coach of the Rhode Island football program." Rizzi said. "My 14 months here in Kingston have been a tremendous experience both personally and professionally.

"This was a very difficult decision to make because of my strong emotional ties to the school. However, the chance to coach with Tony Sparano again and to work for the Miami Dolphins organization is an opportunity that is best for my family and I.

"Although my stay was short, I feel the program has grown tremendously and under the direction of Athletics Director Thorr Bjorn, I know this program will win championships.

"As an alum, I am going to change from the head coach to the biggest fan of the program. My only regret is that I am leaving this great university and the student-athletes and staff, who have committed themselves to this program.

"My family and I would like to thank the university community for their loyalty and support during our time in Kingston."

Rizzi leaves his alma mater after spending just one season with the team. Rizzi came to Kingston after he spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Rutgers University.
