KINGSTON, R.I.
- The University of Rhode Island football team's 10th annual bone marrow registry drive will be held on Thursday, April 12 in URI's Memorial Union ballroom from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

In its first nine years, the drive has added more than 2,000 names to the bone marrow registrar list. Among the names are 12 URI alumni who have saved a life by completing a marrow donation. In all, more than 500 lives have been saved through bone marrow transplants through the Be the Match program.

The Rams are partnering with Love Your Melon this year to increase awareness for this great cause. Love Your Melon is an apparel brand aiding in the battle against pediatric cancer in America. The organization is dedicated to giving a hat to every child battling cancer in America.

Rhode Island football team members and the Love Your Melon crew will be providing information and helping people to register to become potential donors. They also will be providing refreshments and activities for those who participate in the drive or are hoping to learn more.

The entire process to register takes less than 20 minutes and requires a simple cheek swab - no blood or needles are involved.

The Be the Match registry pairs potential donors with those requiring life-saving treatments. Seventy percent of all patients who need a transplant don't have a fully matched donor in their family. Through drives and donations, Be the Match hopes to increase the odds for a life-saving opportunity.
