Smith, Defense Lead Rams to 12-10 Win Over Richmond

How it Happened

Dylan Smith tied a school record with four field goals and the defense came up with a huge turnover with less than two minutes remaining as Rhode Island (3-5, 2-3 CAA Football) beat Richmond 12-10 on Family Day at Meade Stadium.

Smith's final field goal came with 9:16 remaining to give the Rams their final lead of the day. Richmond (2-5, 0-3 CAA Football) was driving for the potential go-ahead score. On first-and-10 from the Rhody 33, Michael Strauss hit Rashad Ponder for 13 yards, but cornerback Rodney Chance forced the fumble and Andre Scott recovered the ball to clinch the victory.

Smith - who made field goals from 24, 47, 23 and 19 yards. The four field goals tied the school record set by Chris Cassara against Northeastern on Nov. 5, 1988. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Rhode Island's special teams units had four field goals, one blocked kick and one forced turnover. Punter Anthony DiPaula averaged 42.7 yards on six punts, adding to the effort.
  • Senior Josh Moody blocked his fourth kick of the season in the first quarter. Moody's block came on a 47-yard attempt by Richmond's Brandon Jordi.
  • Mackenzie Elliott continues to give the Rams a boost on special teams. His 55-yard return on the game's opening kick set up the Smith field goal. Elliott later added a 34-yard return.
  • Defensive end James Timmins had four tackles, including a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. He also broke up two passes. Timmons now has 2.5 sacks and three pass break ups on the year.
  • Defensive back Donovan Walker and linebacker Adam Parker each had a career-high eight tackles to lead the defense.
  • The defense had six tackles for loss. Timmins and Andrew Bose each 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • Freshman Eerin Young rushed for a career-high yards. The Rams rushed for 191 yards as a team. 
  • Tim Wienclaw, Blake Jones and Timmins each had one sack. Jones now leads the team with three sacks.
  • Wide receiver Theo Russell had two catches for 39 yards, including a beautiful one-handed catch that went for 26 yards.

Stat of the Day
15 – Rhode Island's defense broke up 15 passes on the day. The Rams had 20 break ups on the season before Saturday.

What's Next
Rhode Island hosts Delaware for its Homecoming contest Saturday, Oct. 25 at noon. Before the game, former players selected to the Fans' Choice Rhody Grand Team will be honored on the field.
