Rhode Island Rolls to 42-7 Home Win over Central Connecticut

How it Happened
Rhode Island (2-3) scored its most points since the 2009 season and caused six turnovers as the Rams knocked off Central Connecticut, 42-7 Saturday. Two of the Rhody interceptions came in the end zone as the defense did not allow any points until the fourth quarter.

It is the most points in a game since the Rams scored 42 in a 55-42 loss to New Hampshire on Oct. 24, 2009.  The 42 points are the most in a Rhody victory since the team posted a 49-42 win over Brown on Sept. 29, 2007.

Inside the Box Score

  • Cornerback Tyrone Jenkins returned the first interception of his career 43 yards for a touchdown. It was Rhode Island's first interception return for a touchdown since Jarrod Williams had a 33-yard pick-six against Villanova on Nov. 6, 2010.
  • Running back Justin Semmes topped 100 yards for the first time as a Ram, running 18 times for 114 yards and two scores. Fellow back Robbie Delgado had 17 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.
  • Fullback Justin Favreau made a big play in the first quarter. Wide receiver Jawaun Wynn caught a 39-yard pass, but fumbled when hit from behind. CCSU recovered, but Favreau forced a fumble and recovered the ball to maintain possession for Rhody. Eleven plays later, Bob Bentsen hit Andrew Matos for Rhode Island's second touchdown of the day.
  • Favreau scored the first touchdown of his career in the second quarter on a 24-yard strike from Bentsen.
  • Defensive back Doug Johnson ended a potential CCSU scoring drive with an interception in the end zone during the second quarter. It was his second pick of the season.
  • Linebacker Andrew Bose recorded double-digit tackles for the third straight game. He finished with 12 stops (8 solo/4 asst.) and now has a team-best 52 for the season.
  • Safety Andre Scott recorded his first interception as a Ram on the final play of the first half. Like Johnson's pick, Scott's came in the end zone and prevented a potential touchdown.
  • For the game, Rhody made four interceptions for a total return of 69 yards.
  • Defensive back Tim Wienclaw recovered a fumble on CCSU's opening possession of the third quarter. Wienclaw later added an interception and finished with five tackles.
  • Punter Anthony DiPaula made just four punts for the game - an average of 35.8 per boot and a long of 47.  Three of his four punts landed inside the 20.
