Rhode Island Heads to Syracuse for Saturday Night Matchup vs. Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Rhode Island is in search of its second five-game win streak of the season, as it heads to Syracuse for a Saturday night matchup with the Orange. The game, set to tipoff at 7 p.m., will be aired live locally in Rhode Island on Cox Sports Television (ch. 3) and will also be available as part of the ESPN Fullcourt package. Currently 9-1, the Rams will be facing their third opponent from the Big East conference. On Nov. 16, URI downed USF, 74-67, in Daytona Beach, Fla. while last time out - on Dec. 4 - Rhody cruised past Providence, 77-60, in Kingston. Five Rams scored in double-digits versus the Friars, led by Will Daniels' 18 points and nine rebounds. Jimmy Baron added 17 points, while Parfait Bitee and Keith Cothran each had 11. Kahiem Seawright registered his second straight double-double, with 13 points and 10 boards. This will be the eighth time that Rhode Island and Syracuse meet on the hardwood. SU holds a 6-1 lead in the all-time series. The two teams first met on March 2, 1956, with Syracuse taking a 106-82 decision. All six victories by the Orange have come in regular season action. The Orange are coming off a 70-68 win at Virginia on Dec. 5. Freshman Donte Greene led the way with 20 points and 10 boards, while Paul Harris had 10 points and 14 boards. Greene leads the squad, at 19.0 points per game, while Eric Devendorf is averaging 17.0 points per outing. Three others - Jonny Flynn (13.8 ppg), Arinze Onuaku (12.5) and Harris (12.3) each average double figures in the scoring column. Rhody's lone victory came on March 19, 1988 in the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. Carlton "Silk" Owens led five Rams in double-figures with 19 points. The last meeting between the two schools occured on Nov. 30, 2003, as head coach Jim Boeheim's squad held off Rhode Island, 69-65. Dustin Hellenga had 16 and Terrance Mack 10 for the Rams in the loss. In addition to the television coverage, Ram fans can also tune into the game on the radio, on WHJJ 920 AM and The Bridge 99.3 FM, with Steve McDonald and Don Kaull calling all the action.
