KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Delroy James was one of four URI players who scored in double figures which propelled the Rhode Island men's basketball team (19-12) to a 70-61 victory over Saint Louis (12-19) Tuesday night at the Ryan Center.
Sophomore Akeem Richmond, sophomore Nikola Malesevic and senior Marquis Jones also chipped in with 15, 11 and 10 points, respectively. James also posted team-bests of nine rebounds, five blocks, four assists and three steals.
With the win, Rhody will advance to the Quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship where it will faceoff against Richmond on Friday at 9 p.m. Earlier this season, URI defeated the Spiders 78-74 on the road.
Rhody opened up an 11-6 lead at the 12:14 mark of the first half, but the Billikens fought back and took a 20-16 lead with 5:22 to go until the break as they outscored URI 14-5 over the next 6:52.
URI took a 31-29 lead into the locker room as it outscored the Billikens 15-9. James led all URI scorers as he poured in 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting. He also had five rebounds, two assists, three blocks and three steals, all of which were team-highs.
Rhody's defense held Saint Louis to just eight points over the first 10 minutes of the second half and limited the Billikens without a field goal for over four minutes.
Saint Louis cut Rhody's lead to four at 46-42 with 9:02 to go, but Richmond and Malesevic hit back-to-back 3-pointers which increased URI's lead back to double-digits at 52-42 at the 8:01 mark.
The Billikens would not go away as they fought back to within six points with 40 seconds to go, but that was as close as the Saint Louis would get as URI went on to secure the win.
