During the 2011-12 academic year, Mike Monteiro begins his 12th season in Kingston working as the head athletic trainer and strength & conditioning coach for the University of Rhode Island men's basketball program. Monteiro served as the head athletic trainer for the men's basketball team from 1998-2003, prior to beginning a five-year stint in private practice. He handles all facets of player performance, from preventative medicine and rehabilitation of injuries to the team's year-round strength & conditioning program, to team nutrition, on and off the road. Monteiro joined the URI staff as an assistant athletic trainer in 1996, working with the football team. Two years later, he was promoted to a dual role of head athletic trainer and strength & conditioning coach with the men's basketball team. During the 1998-99, he handled additional duties as the assistant strength & conditioning coach for all of URI's athletics programs. He also served a stint with the Providence Bruins (AHL) during the 1997-98 season. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Monteiro earned his bachelors degree in sports medicine in 1993 and a masters degree in exercise science in 2000 - both from the University of Rhode Island. He is an active member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association (EATA). He also served as president of the Rhode Island Athletic Trainer's Association (RIATA) from 2003-2006 and was the 2007 recipient of the RIATA Athletic Trainer of the Year award. In addition to being a Certified Athletic Trainer, Monteiro is a certified member of the National Strength & Conditioning Association. A native of East Providence, R.I., Monteiro and his wife, Deb, have two daughters, Mikaela and Olivia. Updated Sept. 23, 2011
