URI Baseball Participates in Walk Now for Autism Event
Oct. 22, 2009
KINGSTON, R.I. - On Sunday, Sept. 13, the University of Rhode Island baseball team took part in the 2009 Southern New England Walk Now For Autism event, held at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. The Rams joined more than 3,000 individuals who walked to raise over $191,000 for autism research. "We're always happy to get together as a team and help raise awareness for autism," said senior captain Oliver Palmer. "It was amazing to see all the people who came from all over to take part in the event. Its a good feeling knowing that we were able to help make a difference." Supporting the cause is especially important to head coach Jim Foster, as his daughter Delaney is affected by Autism. Walk Now for Autism, the nation's largest grassroots autism walk program, is Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event, taking place in communities across the United States, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. Powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, this successful grassroots fundraising effort not only generates vital funds for autism research, but also raises awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder.
