Baseball Knocked Out of A-10 Tourney with 3-0 Loss to Xavier
May 23, 2008
CAMDEN, N.J. - The fifth-seeded Rhode Island baseball team was knocked out of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship with a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Xavier, Friday night at Campbell's Field. The Rams recorded eight hits in the loss, compared to just four by the Musketeers. Freshman starter Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) took the loss, despite a solid performance on the mound with five strikeouts and just three hits over seven innings of work. Senior Jamie Degidio (Narragansett, R.I.) closed out the game for the Rams, giving up just one hit over the final two innings. Offensively, URI was paced by senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Kenny Burns (Shelton, Conn.) who recorded a pair of hits each. Robbie Kelley put Xavier on top, 1-0, in the top of the third, leading off with a double and then crossing the plate on an RBI ground out by Drew Schmidt. After failing to reach base in their next three at-bats, the Musketeers then used a two-run seventh inning to stretch their lead to 3-0. Rhody rallied back in the bottom of the ninth, as junior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.) drew a one-out walk before O'Malley was hit by a pitch. Xavier then called Jordan Conley to the mound and sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) received four-straight balls to load the bases for the Rams, but back-to-back outs freshman Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) and sophomore Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) ended any chance of a comeback. With the loss, the Rams finish their season with an overall record of 31-27-1.
