KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team posted a 5-2 victory against Quinnipiac in a non-conference contest at Bill Beck Field on Thursday afternoon. The game was stopped after the top of the seventh inning due to poor weather conditions. The win marks the Rams fifth-straight season of at least 20 victories.

Rhode Island took an early lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from junior Dan Batz. The Rams extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from freshman DJ Burns, scoring sophomore Mike Rainville.

Quinnipiac responded in the top of the sixth on a solo home run from senior Charles D'Elia and an RBI triple from junior Albert Marano. The Rams countered in the bottom of the sixth and regained the lead after back-to-back triples from redshirt freshman Adam Houston and freshman Tom Venedam. The Rams added an unearned run after a single from senior Justin Lamboy and a sacrifice fly from freshman Dan Tucker to take the 5-2 lead. Sophomore Mike Lefort then held the Bobcats in the top of the seventh when the game was due to the fog rolling in.

Lefort picked up his first win for Rhode Island, allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings while freshman Cameron Ball suffered the loss in relief for Quinnipiac, allowing three runs on three hits in one inning of work. Ball falls to 0-3 for the season with the setback.

With the win Rhode Island improves to 20-23 for the season while Quinnipiac falls to 12-23 for the year. The Rams will return to action this weekend when they travel to Philadelphia for a crucial Atlantic 10 weekend series against Saint Joseph's.
