Baseball Downs Fordham, 28-8

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team posted an impressive 28-8 victory against Fordham in an Atlantic 10 contest at Bill Beck Field on Monday afternoon. The 20-run margin of victory is the largest in conference play this season while the Rams 28 runs is also a conference record for this year and ties Rhode Island's all-time single-game record. URI notched 31 hits in the victory, a new school record. Rhode Island scored one run in the bottom of the first and exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The second inning was highlighted by a three-run double from senior Justin Lamboy. The Rams added three more in the bottom of the third, including a two-run single from sophomore Matt Sullivan.
After a scoreless fourth, the Rams added six in the fifth, including a two run single from sophomore Josh Nestor. URI tacked on five runs in the sixth after a two-run home run from sophomore Adam Houston and a two-run single from sophomore Dan Hayden. The Rams were ahead 23-0 heading into the top of the seventh. Fordham got on the board in the seventh with three runs, including a two run single from Kurt Thomas. Fordham added five more in the top of the eighth, including a two run single from Steve Turano. Rhode Island then cruised to the 28-8 victory. Sullivan tied a new school record for Rhode Island, scoring five runs while going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Lamboy was 3-for-6 with three runs and four RBI while sophomore Mike Rainville also drove in four runs in the victory. Everyone that had an at bat for Rhode Island notched at least one hit in the game.
Junior Jared Trout pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only four hits with nine strikeouts for his fourth win of the season. Trout also helped himself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Junior Shaun Seales suffered the loss for Fordham, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Rhode Island improved to 19-23, 11-7 in the Atlantic 10 while Fordham falls to 13-22, 5-12 in conference play. URI will return to action on Thursday, May 1st when they host Quinnipiac in a non-conference contest at Bill Beck Field at 3:30 p.m. |
