NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Central Connecticut head baseball coach Charlie Hickey won his 100th game as the head coach of the Blue Devils on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island. The Blue Devils won the first game 6-3 and the second game 12-4. Central is now 19-11-2 overall while the Rams fall to 17-21.

In game one, URI scored a single run in the first inning on an RBI single from Dan Batz. Central plated two in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Tim D'Aquila and an RBI fielder's choice from Tom Pezzello.

The Rams tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from D.J. Burns. The Blue Devils scored three in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. Keith Stegbauer had a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch. The lead stretched to 6-2 on a RBI single from Paul Altomonte in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Scott Vitelli pitched six innings allowing three runs and scattering seven hits. The win was his first of the season. Donnie Crossman picked up the save pitching the seventh inning and allowing only one walk. Stegbauer was 3 for 3 with three RBI and Muldoon had two hits and a run scored in the victory. D.J. Burns was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Batz added a hit and an RBI for the Rams in the loss.

In the second game, Stegbauer extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the first inning. The Blue Devils scored three runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Phil Rothkugel and Nick Macellaro each had RBI's in the inning for the Blue Devils. Three runs in the top of the second inning gave the Rams a 4-3 lead. Matt Sullivan and Jared Trout each had RBI's giving the Rams the one-run lead.

Central took the lead for good with a five-run third inning led by Tim D'Aquila's three-run home run to right field, his first of the season. Brad Muldoon added an RBI single in the inning to give the Blue Devils the 8-4 lead. Four more runs in the bottom of the fifth gave Central the 12-4 lead. Altomonte and Rob Hosgood each had RBI's and Rothkugel had two RBI's to give the Blue Devils the eight run lead.

 

 

Jason McIntyre picked up the win in relief of starter Nate Cole pitching 2.2 innings and allowing just two hits and walking one. Macellaro pitched the final three innings of the game allowing just two hits and no runs for the Blue Devils.

D'Aquila and Rothkugel were each 3 for 3 with three RBI in the win. D'Aquila hit his first home run of the season in the win. Hosgood was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Central. Sullivan had a hit and two RBI and Trout added a hit and an RBI for the Rams in the loss.
