Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Massachusetts
April 19, 2003 AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts junior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) tossed a complete game to pick up the victory in the opener, as the University of Massachusetts baseball team split a doubleheader with Rhode Island at Earl Lorden Field. The Minutemen won the first game 4-1, before the Rams came back to claim a 7-1 victory in game two. UMass now stands 13-11 overall and 7-4 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while Rhode Island moves to 17-18 overall and 9-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams are in first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division. In the first game, Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by outfielder Matt Sullivan, but would not score again. UMass put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first, then added two more in the bottom of the second to conclude the scoring.
In the second contest, the Rams scored unearned runs in the first and second
inning, then increased their lead to 3-0 in the third on an RBI double by
first baseman Dan Batz. The Minutemen put their lone run on the board in the
bottom of the fourth, on a solo home run by senior designated hitter Chris
Morgan (Cranston, R.I.), before the Rams scored one more run in the fifth
and three in the seventh. Outfielder DJ Burns had a solo home run in the
game for Rhode Island and finished the day a combined 5-for-6 with a RBI and five runs scored.
