Baseball Tops Temple In Dramatic Fashion, 8-7 In Extra Innings
April 17, 2004
KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) legged out an infield single with two outs in the eighth inning to drive in sophomore Adam Houston (East Greenwich, R.I.) with the winning run as the University of Rhode Island baseball team defeated Temple 8-7 in extra innings Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Rams trailed 4-0, 6-4 and 7-6 in extra innings, but came back each time to win for the 10th time in their last 11 games. Rhody improved to 17-13-1 overall and 8-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple drops to 14-11, 4-3 in the conference. The two teams combined for five home runs, but none was more important then the one hit by junior Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) with the Rams trailing 8-7 in extra innings. Sullivan smashed the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth inning over the right field fence to tie the game at 7-7. The next batter, junior Mike Rainville (Pawtucket, R.I.), belted a pitch off the wall in center field for a double. Temple reliever Tim Foulkrod came on and retired the first batter he faced. Temple then intentionally walked both Adam Houston (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Dave Savard (Nashua, N.H.) to load the bases. After a botched suicide squeeze with sophomore Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) at the plate that turned into the second out of the inning, Russo chopped a ball over the pitcher's mound and just beat the throw. Temple had taken the lead with two outs on a home run by Pete Colon that gave the Owls a 7-6 lead. Rhode Island had 15 hits in the game, led by freshman Dave Savard (Nashua, N.H.), who went 3-for-4 and Russo, who finished the day 3-for-5. Freshman Scott Brown (Portland, Maine) went 2-for-4 and Sullivan also was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Senior Dan Batz (Mohnton, Pa.) had a hit and drove in two runs on a double. After Rhode Island starter Dan Frederick (Dracut, Mass.) struck out the side in the first inning, Temple put four runs on the board in the second inning. Al Roach led-off with a single, Jason Connor was hit by a pitch and then Pete Colon singled to left field to drive in Roach for a 1-0 lead. Frederick retired the next two batters on a fly out and a strikeout, but No. 9 hitter Freddy Hilliard blasted a three-run moon shot over the fence in left for a 4-0 lead. The Rams came back to tie the score in the bottom of the third inning, stringing six-straight hits together. Freshman Dave Savard (Nashua, N.H.), sophomore Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) and freshman Scott Brown (Portland, Maine) hit three consecutive singles to load the bases and senior Dan Batz (Mohnton, Pa.) hit a two-run double down the left field line. Sophomore Zach Zuercher (Warwick, R.I.) blooped a single into left to plate the Rams' third run and junior Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) hit a RBI-single to center, tying the game at 4-4. Temple took the lead right back in the fourth, when No. 8 hitter Marc Wagner hit a two-run homer to left field to put the Owls up 6-4. The Owls almost added another run in the fourth, when Hilliard cleared the fence for the second time on the afternoon, but Savard reached over the wall and made the catch, robbing Hilliard of the homer. The Rams put together a two-out rally to tie the game in the sixth. Sophomore Josh Nestor (Nashua, N.H.) hit a solo homer with two outs and freshman Ryan Cunningham (Centerville, Va.) hit a pinch-hit single. Savard singled to center for his third hit of the day and with runners on the corners, Savard stole second and the throw down went into center field, allowing pinch-runner Daryl Holcomb (Wilmington, Del.) to score the tying run.
