Baseball Tops St. Bonaventure 8-4 To Maintain Hold On First Place

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team posted an 8-4 victory against St. Bonaventure in the third game of a weekend series at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, R.I. on Monday.

The two teams battled through three scoreless innings before Rhode Island exploded offensively in the bottom of the fourth. The Rams scored seven runs on five hits, including a three-run double from junior Dan Batz and a two-run double from sophomore Josh Nestor.

St. Bonaventure responded in the top of the fifth when senior Josh Paine hit an RBI single. The Bonnies loaded the bases with one out, however the Rams induced an inning ending double play. SBU added three more runs in the top of the sixth after a three-run double from freshman Matt Agostinelli.

Sophomore Adam Houston went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI while Batz went 1-for-3 with one run and an RBI for Rhode Island. St. Bonaventure junior Eric Wilson was 3-for-3 with two runs while Agostinelli was 1-for-2 with three RBI for the Bonnies.

Rhode Island junior Jared Trout improved to 3-1 with the victory, allowing four runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work while Jad Prachniak pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the save. Senior Matt Gunesch suffered the loss for St. Bonaventure, allowing seven runs, only one of them earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts in five and a third innings of work.

With the win, Rhode Island improves to 14-17 overall and 8-4 in the Atlantic 10 to maintain their hold on first-place. St. Bonaventure drops to 12-10, 4-4 in the Atlantic 10 with the loss. The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, April 16th when they travel to Fairfield for a matchup with the Stags at 3:00 p.m.
