Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team had a 5-0 lead going into the top of the fifth inning, but St. Bonaventure scored six runs in the fifth inning and tallied five more in the sixth to take an 11-6 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Bill Beck Field.

The loss meant the Bonnies and Rams switched spots in the Atlantic 10's East Division. St. Bonaventure took over first place with a 4-2 conference record (12-8 overall) and Rhode Island dropped to second place with a 6-4 record (12-17 overall).

Rhode Island junior Reid Willett (Nashua, N.H.) only allowed two hits and cruised through the first four innings. But in the fifth, Willett walked three batters, including the first two of the inning. The Bonnies would score one run on a catcher's interference and one on a bases loaded walk before Willett was relieved by Tom Venedam. Venedam struck out the first batter he faced, but then gave up a grand slam home run to Matt Landahl that gave the Bonnies a 6-5 lead.

St. Bonaventure added five more runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-5 lead. Rhode Island tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on a RBI-single by sophomore Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) and putting runners on second and third, but John Brewer got out of the jam to earn Kyle Johnson (5-1) the win.

Rhode Island senior Justin Lamboy (Warwick, R.I.) had two hits and scored a run. Freshman Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) had a hit and drove in two runs. Sophomore Mike Rainville (Pawtucket, R.I.) had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run. Freshman designated hitter Adam Houston (East Greenwich, R.I.) went 1-for-1 with a run scored and freshman DJ Burns (Lynn, Mass.) went 1-for-2.
