Rhody Picks Up 3-1 Win Over Saint Louis in Series Opener
April 11, 2008
KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) recorded three hits and two runs as the Rhode Island baseball team defeated Saint Louis, 3-1, in the first game of a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Bill Beck field. Freshman Pete Mastors (Narragansett, R.I.) also had three hits in the win while classmate Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) batted in two runs. Mastors singled to right to lead off the bottom of the first before advancing to third on back-to-back bunt singles by sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) and senior Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.). Senior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) then hit into a 4-6-3 double play which allowed Mastors to score the first run of the game. The next inning, O'Malley doubled down the left field line and went on to put the Rams up 2-0 on an RBI ground out by Cammans. Cammans plated O'Malley again in the fourth inning, on a fielder's choice ball that was bobbled by SLU second baseman Andrew Guerra. The Billikens got their only run of the game in the top of the seventh when pinch hitter David Blackwell scored on Casey Moore's sac fly to center field. Senior Brett Palanski (Nashua, N.H.) lasted six innings and earned the win for URI while senior closer Jamie Degidio (Narragansett, R.I.) picked up his fifth save of the season. Saint Louis' Scott Turmail was charged with the loss.
