Ninth-Inning Rally Lifts Rams Past Siena, 6-5

April 10, 2008

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomores Zoey Angulo (Miami, Fla.) and Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) each crushed a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Rhode Island baseball team past Siena, 6-5, Thursday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Freshman Cam Fox (Braintree, Mass.) earned the win for the Rams, making his first career appearance in the top of the ninth.

Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) and senior Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.) crossed the plate to get the Rams within three (5-2). From there, sophomore Nick Greenwood (Southington, Conn.), junior Luke Demko (Gilford, N.H.) and Fox took over, allowing just one Siena hit over the final three innings.

Down by three in the bottom of the ninth, senior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) led off with a bunt single, freshman Tom Coulombe (Lincoln, R.I.) followed with a walk and senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) was hit by a pitch to set up Deveney's two-run double to right center. With Deveney on second and O'Malley on third, the Saints pulled Maikel Hurtado and went to Ryan King. King intentionally walked freshman Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) to reload the bases for Angulo, who sent the ball deep into left center, plating O'Malley and Deveney for the 6-5 win.

Hagey, Zaneski and Deveney finished with two hits apiece while freshman starter Ken Graveline (Prospect, Conn.) lasted five innings and gave up five hits and five runs (three earned) with five strikeouts.

The win improves URI's record to 12-19 while the Saints drop to 8-20.

Rhody is back in action tomorrow afternoon for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader against Saint Louis, set to begin at Noon. The Rams originally were scheduled to face the Billikens at 3 p.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, but due to Saturday's poor weather forecast, the teams will play two nine-inning games on Friday before closing out the three-game series on Sunday at Noon.
