Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Brown scored four unearned runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-5 win over the University of Rhode Island baseball team and sweep a doubleheader on Wednesday at Bill Beck Field. Brown won the first game 8-3 behind three home runs.

For the second time in the last four days, every Rhode Island batter in the lineup recorded a hit in Wednesday's second game, but the Rams did not score after a two-run home run by senior Mike Rainville (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the third inning.

Rhode Island sophomore Ryan Cunningham (Centreville, Va.) had a RBI-single in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Cunningham went 2-for-3 in the first game, including a home run. Rainville went 1-for-2 with two RBIs on his second homer of the season that put the Rams up 5-4. Sophomore Daryl Holcomb (Wilmington, Del.) had a hit, RBI and runs scored.

Brown's Matt Kutler was 4-for-4 in the second game to finish a perfect 7-for-7 in the doubleheader. He drove in three runs in the second game and two in the first game to give him five RBIs on the day. Paul Christian and Bryan Tews each had two hits for Brown in the second game.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead after just two batters, when lead-off hitter Bobby Wiginton opened the game with a solo home run to right field and then Tews made it back-to-back dingers with a blast over the right-center field fence

Rhode Island evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the first inning. Holcomb singled to start the inning and with two outs Cunningham came through with a RBI-single to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Savard reached on an infield single that would move Cunningham to third and a wild pitch allowed him to score and tie the game.

Brown put up two more runs in the top of the second inning on a RBI-groundout by Tews and a RBI-single by Kutler to make it 4-2.

Rhode Island cut the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the second when senior Chris Stelma (Glenwood, N.J.) led off with a double to left, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Zachary Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) and scored on a sac fly by Holcomb.

The Rams took the lead in the bottom of the third by way of the home run. Russo singled with two outs and Rainville followed with the home run to left field for a 5-4 edge.

That lead didn't last long as Brown took advantage of an error to push across four unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-5 lead. With two outs Kutler doubled into the left field corner to plate two runs and then Larson singled to left to drive in two more runs.

Rhode Island (8-14, 4-2 Atlantic 10) returns to action on Saturday when the Rams host Richmond for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
