Baseball Overtakes La Salle 19-8, Sweeps Series
April 5, 2004
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman Scott Brown (Portland, Maine) hit two home runs and sophomore Daryl Holcomb (Wilmington, Del.) belted a grand slam as the University of Rhode Island baseball team erased a 7-0 deficit to take a 19-8 victory over La Salle on Monday, sweeping the three-game Atlantic 10 series. The Rams (11-12-1, 4-2 Atlantic 10) trailed 7-0 after two innings, but battled back to take the lead in the top of the sixth and then blew the game open with a two-out grand slam by Holcomb, his first home run in a Rhode Island uniform and first grand slam of his collegiate career. Brown went 3-for-6 with two home runs and a career-high five RBIs. Sophomore Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) went 3-for-6, as did senior Dan Batz (Mohnton, Pa.), who also drove in three runs. Holcomb, a transfer from the University of Delaware, went 2-for-4 with four RBIs coming on the grand slam. Junior Joe Viscuso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two walks. Sophomore Josh Nestor (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Dave Savard (Nashua, N.H.) each went 2-for-5. La Salle (13-10-2, 0-6 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings, thanks to three home runs. Ryan Parfitt led off the bottom of the first with a homer and Scott Gehringer led off the second inning with a solo shot. Jay Snyder added a three-run homer in the second that put the Explorers up 7-0. The Rams got three runs back in the bottom of the third, with their first run scoring on a wild pitch and then Batz and Russo each driving in a run on RBI-groundouts.
After sophomore Zach Zuercher (Warwick, R.I.) drew a walk and Holcomb singled, Brown hit a three-run homer with two outs in the fourth to bring the Rams to within one at 7-6. La Salle's George Hudock hit a solo homer in the fifth to put the Explorer's up 8-6, but the Rams put up five runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.
Viscuso drew a walk and Brown followed with his second homer of the game and third on the season to tie the game at 8-8. Russo singled and Batz followed with his 13th double of the season to drive in Russo and give the Rams a 9-8 edge. Rhody added two more runs in the sixth on a RBI-groundout by Nestor and he later scored on a wild pitch. Already staked to a 11-8 lead in the eighth, the Rams busted the game open. Batz singled, Nestor was hit by a pitch and with two outs Zuercher drew a walk to load the bases. That's when Holcomb crushed a pitch for the grand slam and a 15. The Rams scored four more runs in the top of the ninth as they won their fourth-straight game. Junior Mike Harris (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) earned the win, pitching three innings in relief, allowing one run to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Tom Venedam (Suffern, N.Y.) earned his first save, pitching four-shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Rhode Island hosts Boston College on Tuesday at Bill Beck Field at 3:30 p.m. and travels to in-state rival Brown on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
