First-Place Baseball Downs Dayton, 5-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team completed a series sweep of Atlantic 10 rival Dayton with a 5-1 victory on Monday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.

Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead when freshman D.J. Burns, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a passed ball to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Rhode Island junior pitched Jared Trout was perfect through the first three innings before Dayton broke through in the top of the fourth. Senior Rory Thornton led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Joe McSoley and scored on an RBI groundout by junior Chris Kemmer.

The Rams responded in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Matt Sullivan led off with a single and advanced to second on a single from senior Justin Lamboy. After a double-steal, Sullivan and Lamboy scored on a two-run single to left from sophomore John Maloney. After a pair of stolen bases by Maloney, he scored on a single to centerfield from freshman John Nestor, giving the Rams a 4-1 lead. URI added another in the bottom of the fifth when Sullivan, who reached on a single to center, scored on a passed ball to give the Rams a 5-1 lead.

Trout then shut down the flyers from the sixth inning on, allowing only one player to reach base on a walk.

Burns went 2-for-4 with a run while Sullivan was 3-for-4 with a pair of Runs in the win for Rhode Island. Sullivan also tied a school record with four stolen bases.

Trout improved to 2-1 for the season, allowing only one run on two hits with nine strikeouts for his first complete-game while Freshman Craig Stammen fell to 0-2, allowing five runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.

The Rams improve to 10-13, 5-1 in the Atlantic 10 with the win while Dayton falls to 6-16, 1-5 in conference play. Rhode Island will return to action on Tuesday, April 1st when they travel to Connecticut for a non-conference contest with the Huskies at 3:00 p.m.
