STORRS, Conn. - Josh Nestor, Daryl Holcomb and Dave Savard each had three hits as the University of Rhode Island baseball team defeated Connecticut 7-5 Wednesday.

Nestor went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Holcomb went 3-for-5 with a RBI as the Rams improved to 8-12-1 on the season. Junior Matt Sullivan had two hits.

Sophomore Adam Perkins posted his first collegiate victory, allowing three runs in five innings and striking out four. Sophomore Zach Zuercher came on in relief with one out in the ninth and earned his first save.

The Rams trailed 2-0 after three innings, but got a run back in the top of the fourth when Nestor led off with a single to center and junior Matt Sullivan followed with a bunt single. Dave Savard grounded into a fielder's choice that gave the Rams runners on the corners with two outs and Holcomb reached on a bunt single that scored Nestor.

Rhode Island then erupted for four runs in the fifth inning thanks to three UConn errors. Sophomore Wayne Russo reached on an error and advanced to third on another one. Senior Dan Batz walked and Nestor drove in Russo with a RBI-single that moved Batz to third. Batz scored on a passed ball and then junior Mike Rainville reached on an error that allowed Nestor to score for a 5-2 advantage.

The Huskies (8-9) two doubles to plate a run in the bottom of the fifth and pull within one at 5-4, but Rhody added two more runs in the sixth. Junior Joe Viscuso singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground out. Russo drew a walk and then an error by the pitcher allowed Viscuso to score and Russo to reach second. Russo then scored on a RBI-single by Nestor.
