Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Reid Willett (Nashua, N.H.) pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout as the Rhode Island baseball team blanked Dayton 6-0 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Bill Beck Field.

Junior Dan Batz (Mohnton, Pa.) went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two coming on a home run in the fourth inning that put the Rams up 5-0. Sophomore Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) had two hits and drove in a run for the Rams (8-13, 3-1 Atlantic 10).

Willett (3-2) went the full seven innings, allowing four hits and one walk, while striking out five. The righthander had a two-hit shutout going until Dayton put together back-to-back singles with two outs in the seventh, but Willett got the next batter to ground to second to preserve the shutout.

The Rams got on the board in the third inning, when Dayton starter Drew Chesebro hit Rhode Island second baseman Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) with a pitch and Batz followed with a single to left field.

Russo and Batz moved to second and third on a balk by Chesebro and Sullivan followed with a RBI single to plate Russo, and when the left fielder's throw was off-line, Batz scored for a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Adam Houston (East Greenwich, R.I.) followed with a RBI-double to deep right center to put the Rams up 3-0 after three innings.

Rhode Island added two more runs in the fourth, when Russo singled and Batz connected on a two-run homer to right field.

The Rams added their final run in the bottom of the sixth when junior Jared Trout (Gilbertsville, Pa.) had a pinch-hit single and scored on a RBI-single by Batz.

The Rams battle Dayton in the second game of a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
