KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team dropped a tough 3-1 decision against Sacred Heart in a non-conference matchup at Bill Beck Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The two teams battled through four scoreless innings before Rhode Island broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Reese Wasson singled to left center and advanced to third on a double to left from freshman Tom Venedam. Wasson then scored on an RBI groundout from junior John Maloney to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart responded in the top of the sixth when junior Ed Merotta hit a solo homerun to tie the game at 1-1.

The score remained tied until the top of the ninth when Sacred Heart took the lead on back-to-back doubles from sophomore Greg Delmonico and junior Jamie Schilkowski. The Pioneers added another run on an RBI double from freshman David Kaloyanides, giving them a two-run lead. The Rams were unable to respond in the bottom of the ninth, giving Sacred Heart the 3-1 victory.

Rhode Island junior Jared Trout allowed one run on three hits in eight innings of work with 13 strikouts while sophomore Keith Ross suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits on one inning. Senior Lee Nastu pitched the complete-game victory for Rhode Island, allowing one run on nine hits with one strikeout in nine innings.
