Baseball Falls to East Carolina, 7-2
March 15, 2008
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Rhode Island baseball team fell to East Carolina, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the loss, the Rams drop to 5-7 while the Pirates improve to 12-4. ECU used a Ryan Wood homer and a two-run single by Dustin Harrington to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Wood blasted a two-run shot over the left-center fence to put the Pirates up, 5-0, three innings later. Senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) reached first in the top of the sixth inning - on an East Carolina error - and scored the Rams's first run on classmate Zach Zaneski's (Waterford, Conn.) triple to right center. Deveney followed with a ground-out that plated Zaneski, cutting the Pirates' lead to three. However, in the bottom of the inning, Harrington crushed a lead-off homerun to make the score 6-2 before ECU tallied its final run the following inning on an run-scoring single by Kyle Roller. Sophomore Eric Smith (Milford, Mass.) was charged with the loss, after giving up six hits and five runs in five innings while freshman Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) was responsible for the Pirates' final two runs. Junior Luke Demko (Guilford, N.H.) closed out the game for URI with a scoreless eighth inning. Rhody returns to Clark-LeClair Stadium for its final game against East Carolina, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
